Data Export
Your journal belongs to you. Export a complete copy of your writing at any time — no subscription required.
📥 How to export your data
- 1Go to Settings → Data & Privacy → Export My Data.
- 2Choose your format: JSON or Plain Text.
- 3Tap Export. Inwardly decrypts your entries on-device and packages them.
- 4The iOS Share Sheet appears. Save to Files, share via AirDrop, send via email, or save to any other app.
📄 Export formats explained
- JSON format — A structured data file containing all entry metadata (date, mood, journal name, location) and full text content. Best for importing into another app, archiving to a database, or processing programmatically.
- Plain text format — A human-readable
.txtfile with each entry formatted chronologically, including the date, mood, and full text. Best for reading in any text editor or printing as a keepsake.
What is included. The export includes every entry across all your journals: date, time, mood, location (if tagged), journal name, and full entry text. Photos are not included in text exports.
🔐 Why export before deleting an entry or your account
Deleting an entry or your account is permanent — see the managing your journal guide and settings guide. Exporting first gives you a local, readable copy that exists independently of your Inwardly account.
